ANTONIO GABICA, added another feather in his cap by winning the 1st San Miguel Corporation (SMC)-Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP) 9-Ball Ranking Tournament late Wednesday at the Bugsy's Lair Billiard Hall in Sgt. Esguerra corner Timog in Quezon City.
The 35-year-old Gabica, a member of the star-studded Bugsy Promotion trounced Japan based Roel Esquillo, 9-6, in the semi-final round then subdued Bugsy stablemate Carlo Biado, 11-5, in the finals to enroute the top prize of P50,000.
Gabica who bagged the gold in the 9-ball competition of last year's Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, also fresh from winning the 4th annual SMB RP 9-Ball Open last month at the Silver City Mall in Ortigas Center surged to a 7-3 lead against Biado in this event which attracted 87 cue artists that included current WPA 9-Ball Champion and WPA 8-Ball Champion Ronato Alcano who earlier eliminated in the qualifying tournament was held at the Side Pocket Billiard hall in Quezon Avenue, Quezon City last Tuesday.
"Magandang practice ko na ito bago ang qualifying event ng WPC, sana makapasok ako sa main draw," said the 2006 Doha Asian Games 9-ball gold medalist Gabica, who inspired the presence of his wife Jean after watching his game against Biado.
Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP) president Ernesto Fajardo is very happy about the outcome of the tournament which aims to discover future world class players and bringing camaraderie to country's pool players.
"Layunin ng event na ito na makadiskubre tayo ng future world class player at mabigyan din ng pagkakataon 'yung mga rising star natin na makalaban ang ilang mga top player natin," Said Fajardo.
According to tournament director Jojo Santos Arruejo, the next leg of the 1st SMC-BSCP ranking tournaments goes to Bauang, La Union on Nov.20 to 21.
