DEFENDING CHAMPION Ronato "Volcano" Alcano and Ralf "Kaiser" Souquet of Germany will face each other in what promises to be a classic race-to-13, alternate break final at the World Pool 8-Ball Championships at the the Expo Center in Fujairah City, United Arab Emirates late last night. This after the tow hottest pool cue hurdle their respective rivals in the final four.
Alcano edged last year's runner-up and compatriot Dennis "Robocop" Orcollo,10-9, in the semi-finals while Souquet outplayed Marcus "Napoleon" Chamat of Sweden,10-8.
Actually, this is the second time the two players face off for the coveted crown. Alcano routed Souquet in the finals of 2006 Philippine WPA World 9-Ball Championships at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.
Here in WPA World 8-Ball, the two pool wizard were playing for the top prize of $60,000 with the runner-up getting $20,000, saying they deserved it after a tough and gruelling preliminaries round and knock-out stage before the championships round.
Last Year, Alcano complete the coveted double of winning the World Pool 9-Ball and 8-Ball championships and thereby duplicate the feat of
Chinese Taipei's teenaged sensation Wu Chia Ching, who achieved the distinction in 2005 and Filipino Hall of Famer Efren "Bata" Reyes, 1999 WPA World 9-Ball Champion in Cardiff, Wales and 2004 WPA World 8-Ball Champion here in Fujairah.
Alcano failed to set a new record (winning three major title, World 9-Ball, World 8-Ball and US Open 9-Ball) after settled for a runner-up place with eventual champion American brightest hope Shane Van Boening in the 2007 US Open 9-Ball in Chessapeake, Virginia.
