GIVE ME A BREAK

Commentary: By Frank Lacambra

Last bus to a Guinness Tour victory

The grand finale of the inaugural Guinness 9-ball Tour gets on the road at the end of this month.

It’s been an enjoyable and exciting series the past five months. But for many Filipinos, it’s been a frustrating, if not an embarrassing, time. Primarily because of one thing: Filipino billiards players ended up without winning a tour leg, in spite of the fact that the BSCP fielded some of our finest players.

This coming weekend’s event is the icing on the cake, so to speak. The top 10 players of the tour will battle it out, not for a leg title, but for the overall championship and the enticingly generous prize money put up by the Guinness people.

For Filipino billiards aficionados, however, it has become a matter of pride. The battle cry is loud and clear: we need to win this one, if only to prove that Filipino pool masters are as good as advertised. So you can imagine the tremendous pressure on our players—to “whup ‘em.”

The job has fallen on two of our guys who are left standing, namely: Ronnie Alcano, the reigning WPC champion, and Lee Vann Corteza, the current national champion.

Will one of them deliver? Will he bring home the victory we need so desperately and salve our collective bruised ego?
