NEWS ON NY 9-BALL TOURNAMENT

CORTEZA, ORCOLLO STILL KICKING IN NY 9-BALL

FROM six Filipino competitors only two remained in contention in the ongoing IX Turning Stone Classic 9-Ball Tournament at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York.

The four Filipino campaigners who were booted out in this 128 field, US$25,000 tournament are: double world champion Ronato Alcano, Jose "Amang" Parica, Al Lapena and Mhet Vergarra, after they suffered their second loss in the loser's bracket in this double elimination format that offers US$12,000 to the winner.

Alcano yielded to Neils Feijen of the Netherlands (9-7), while Parica bowed to Mike Davis of the United States (9-2), while Lapena lost to Eric Hjorliefson of Canada (9-8), and Vergarra succumbed to Mika Immonen of Finland (9-4).

Reigning national Open champion and All Japan Championships ruler Lee Vann Corteza and 2007 BCA Enjoypool.com champion Dennis Orcollo blasted their respective rivals to keep the Philippine’s hope alive in this annual event.

The 28-year-old Corteza, top player of Negros Billiard Stable crushed Tony Chohan of the United States (9-3) and Tony Robles of Mexico (9-2) while the 28-year-old Orcollo, a native of Bislig, Surigao del Sur beat Dennis Grau of the United States (9-7) and Ralf Souquet of Germany (9-3), in that order.

However, one of the Pinoy cue masters will have to be relegated to the loser's bracket because both Corteza and Orcollo are paired in the Winner's Side 2 bracket.

Meanwhile, Louis Ulrich of San Diego, California trounced Stevie Moore of Spartanburg, South Carolina (9-4) in the Winner's Side 1 to face Karen Corr of Ireland in the next round, winner over Jimmy Jusman of Indonesia (9-7). The top finisher in Winner's Side 1 will face top finisher of Winner's Side 2 for the hot seat match.
